Savage Beauty at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

July 8, 2011

Alexander McQueen was a visionary, an artist, a man with deep convictions who saw the world in a way most people reject. Fashion is not usually a medium for self exploration, at least by the designer, and clothes are usually designed solely for their aesthetics and beauty. McQueen’s clothes take beauty run with it to it’s furthest reaches. Using unique materials, shapes, and concepts, McQueen tells a story with his clothes and collections of a dark world, or at least the world through a dark lens. McQueen tragically took his own life in February of 2010. The Metropolitan Museum of Art teamed up with his fashion house as well as previous friends, clients, and bosses to create Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. The retrospective of the late designer takes place in different galleries arranged thematically. The exhibit is not just a showcase of McQueen’s dresses, it is a multi-sensory experience complete with music, sound effects, videos, and projections. The show runs through August 7th at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Lines have been hours long to get into the gallery, so our advice is to buy tickets online the day before, arrive first thing in the morning, and head straight to the exhibit to avoid the crowds. Or, if you can’t make it, check out this video tour:
