Classroom Desk Carvings

London-based artist Ben Turnbull created these detailed desk carvings of modern weaponry, and they have given rise to some controversial remarks. Ben was expelled from two different schools during his youth, yet during his time there, he immensely enjoyed carving and drawing caricatures on the classroom desks. For this series of carvings that resemble children’s toys (according to the artist), Ben chose to recreate his childhood carvings in a slightly different context.

Ben’s inspiration came from the “global dominance” of the American political system and the prevalence of violence in society. In using old classroom desks as his “canvas” the artist could potentially be depicting the idea that the fascination with violence can begin at an early age, and is therefore spreading at a viral rate.
